Fight breast cancer, one M & M at a time

Pink M&M's support Breast Cancer Awareness

You may have heard that October is breast cancer awareness month. This a great opportunity to raise awareness and money to save lives. Now that’s something we can all put some effort into right? Right!

So the corporate folks over at Masterfoods have released Pink M & M’s to support the cause and just in time for Halloween no less. You buy a bag of 14 oz. M & M’s and 35 cents goes to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Splurge on the 21 oz. bag and the bounty goes up to 50 cents.

Now we all know what women mean to all of us (although approx 1% of all breast cancers occur in men as well), and among those that love women are little kids. And little kids like candy right? And little kids will be collecting candy and dolling it out in just a few short days for Halloween right? Right! So go out to to one of those big box warehouse stores where you buy in Army/Navy quantity and buy some pink M & M’s!

In the mean time, if you’re a blogger then go ahead and put up a post about this before you run down to the store. Carl Chapman, a blogger I just became acquainted with from another blogger friend of mine has gone on a blog strike until 25 other bloggers put up a post about this. If it counts, this will go up on all our blogs, however meager their traffic, because dammit, it’s the thought that counts.

Thanks to Carl and Ami I’ll be making pink M & M’s my sole distribution for Halloween this year.

Exceler8ion – EXCELER8ion is Julian and Shannon Seery Gude’s take on the world of social media and online recruitment marketing. They were nice enough to post an announcement on all of their blogs – Exceler8ion, Localna8ion, That’s Wet, Cute Little Bastards, and julians.name. I think if I had given them advance warning, they might have single-handedly gotten me over the hump by creating enough blogs to get the job done.

For an interesting twist on the topic of the “pinking” of breast cancer awareness, there are several articles I link to from my website, http://www.honestmedicine.typepad.com, that you might like to read. Here are just a few of them:

To access the articles, go to the left side of my site, and look under “CANCER”:

1) “Welcome to Cancerland: A Mammogram Leads to a Cult of Pink Kitsch,” by Barbara Ehrenreich. A classic.

2) “Chemo Concession” (gives some surprising information about the chemotherapy industry)

Both articles will give you another perspective on the “think pink” phenomenon. I hope you will find them informative. Thanks for giving them a look!

Sincerely,
Julia Schopick

Julian;

Thanks for the information, I only wish that I’d read your post before Halloween! As someone who’s been personally affected by breast cancer I’m particularly grateful to you and your fellow bloggers for caring enough to spread the word.
