Un-career sites. I love it. Fits right into the ethos of everything else. I’ve noticed that, too. I’ve noticed that blogs now all come with job boards. And at first, this bugged me. But it’s really like the “widgetization” of job sourcing. Because an avid reader of Tech Crunch will better understand who’d be seeking to hire through that spot. Lifehacker, ditto. Hell, Grasshoppers on Facebook has already seen five or six jobs float out there.

So interesting. I like your view of this. Thank you!

Shannon, this is a “white paper” on the subject…and I love the push to Facebook from LinkedIn. Julian already pointed me there.
Thank you both for your constantly fresh and inspiring insights…which require no interpretation or translation.

“I can name only a handful of companies that are overtly using social media for the purposes of connecting to and engaging talent in their employer brand ..”

Which companies?

Chris – Thanks for stopping by. Your Grasshoppers group was part of the inspiration for this post. You say that you like that my ideas “Fit right into the ethos of everything else” and I say of course it does! Social media is ALL about people – and there is nothing in business that is more focused on people than the employer brand! I hope you come back often. I posted a job on grasshoppers by the way :-)

Jason – Long time no talk. I so hope that you are well and I am flattered by you highlighting my post.

Norm – very glad that the ideas convey well. I have to try very hard to make social media accessible and not have any of it get lost in a perception of ‘geekiness’.

Rob – I thought you’d never ask! Here are a few of the ones that are “overtly” using social media – this list does not include the companies whose employer brands are being affected by social media even if that wasn’t the specific intent (for a few examples of that, see the Southwest Airlines blog, http://www.blogsouthwest.com/ – how does this NOT link directly into their career site??? OR what is going on with comments on job postings on Indeed.com – http://www.indeed.com/forum/cmp/Washington-Mutual.html OR the point discussed in this post – http://www.exceler8ion.com/2006/12/27/jobsters-rumors-and-social-media/).

The list of overt social media for recruitment users is in no particular order:

1- Microsoft the Jobs Blog, http://blogs.msdn.com/jobsblog and of course my friend Heather Hamilton, http://blogs.msdn.com/heatherleigh/

2- Ernst & Young – social networking strategy. 8500 members in their Facebook Group focused on Careers. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2204439307

3- HCA – Twitter profile focus on careers – http://twitter.com/acareerathca

4- Google – Employee Testimonial You Tube Videos – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xs6zBN_GEJ8

5- Yahoo – http://myyblog.com/blog/2007/07/17/join-the-my-yahoo-team/

6- EDS, http://www.eds.com/sites/cs/blogs/eds_next_big_thing_blog/default.aspx – at least they put a link to Careers on the top nav of their blog.

7- Honeywell, http://honeywellblogs.com/ – they ONLY have a careers blog and they now allow comments.

And then there are the companies that are using social software internally to connect people and enable collaboration (and though I do not have hard numbers, I venture to say that this will help to foster a very flat, open and positive environment that empowers the people).
